Transforming Lives Through Pet Aid Vet

Thanks to £80,000 a year for 3 years of funding from the Pets Foundation, the Scottish SPCA is trialling a groundbreaking new service, Pet Aid Vet, across communities in Glasgow, Ayrshire, Dumfries, and Galloway. This pilot program is a lifeline for those struggling to provide the best care for their beloved pets.

Keeping Pets in Loving Homes

When Michelle* found herself in temporary accommodation and facing financial hardship, the thought of missing Roxy’s* vital vet appointment filled her with dread. Her loyal husky was her constant companion, a source of comfort during difficult times. Thanks to Pet Aid Vet, Michelle and Roxy received the care they desperately needed.

David Smith, Scottish SPCA Community Veterinary Nurse Manager, emphasises the importance of preventing crises: “No one should have to give up a pet due to financial difficulties. Our goal is to support people before problems escalate, ensuring animals remain in loving homes.”

The Pet Aid Vet team, including Anna and David, went above and beyond to help Michelle and Roxy. A routine checkup and treatment plan ensured Roxy’s paw infection began to heal. Michelle’s relief and gratitude were evident.

Making a Difference

Michelle shared, “The service has been incredibly helpful, and I hope Pet Aid continues to support others. Don’t hesitate to seek help when you need it.”

David Smith added, “Our focus is prevention. Pet Aid Vet allows us to address issues early, preventing them from becoming major problems. We’ve already helped over 100 pets since March 2024, and we’re committed to expanding our reach.”

Key achievements of the Pet Aid Vet pilot program so far:

  • Supported 100 animals
  • Assisted 26 people through Community Hubs
  • Responded to 41 referrals from Scottish SPCA Inspectors
  • Operated in 8 areas across Scotland

The Foundation’s generous support has been instrumental in launching this vital service. We are proud to partner with the Scottish SPCA to make a tangible difference in the lives of pets and their owners.
