Tinsel Finds New Home After Surgery
Did you know that black and black/white cats still find new homes slower than other colours?
A lucky black cat named Tinsel is now settled into her new home after having surgery to improve her quality of life thanks to Cats Protection.
Tinsel needs medical care
The long-haired moggy came into the Cats Protections North Wales Cat Centre in December 2023, as her owner moved into a nursing home, and was named Tinsel by the centre team as a nod to the approaching festive season.
On arrival, the team was told that she had previously sustained a pelvic injury, so they sent her for X-rays. These showed that it had healed well, although it had resulted in her needing a small daily dose of laxatives each day to help keep her healthy.
While she was in care, however, it became clear that Tinsel was losing weight despite having a healthy appetite. Further tests revealed that she had hyperthyroidism, a condition where an overactive thyroid produces too much of the thyroid hormone, leading to an array of health issues.
Tinsel recovers and is ready for her new furever home
After several weeks of treatment and lots of food to get her hormone levels stabilised and her weight up, Tinsel had an operation to remove her thyroid glands. She spent the next few days at the veterinary surgery to monitor her progress.
When the vets were satisfied with her recovery from the surgery, she returned to Cats Protection, where the team kept a close eye on her for the next couple of weeks. Blood tests then showed that her thyroid levels were in order, so she was given the all-clear to be adopted.
Three weeks later, Tinsel was successfully matched to her forever home, and she settled in well.
Deputy Manager Evanna Greene said: “Tinsel was with us for quite a while and needed quite a lot of care due to her condition. She was a real sweetheart throughout her treatment and recovery, so we’re delighted to see her settling so well in her new home. The photos we’ve been sent by her new owner also show that the fur on her neck, where she had to be shaved for the operation, is growing back brilliantly. She looks like a new cat!”
