Eden Animal Rescue – Marley’s Case Highlights Need for Improved Isolation Kennels

Poorly pup enters the rescue

An 8-year-old labrador named Marley arrived in a poorly state at Eden Animal Rescue in 2021. Upon intake, the staff witnessed that the affectionate pup displayed a persistent cough, nasal discharge, and lethargy. These symptoms pointed to Kennel Cough, a highly contagious respiratory infection that can spread rapidly in environments like boarding kennels and rescue centres.

The staff quickly took steps to isolate Marley to prevent the other dogs from getting infected; however, their isolation facilities at the time lacked the appropriate ventilation and space needed to quarantine sick animals.

Makeshift isolation area for Marley

The rescue recounted: “Marley’s treatment required a calm, clean, and well-ventilated space where he could rest and recover without the risk of spreading the infection. Given our limited isolation facilities, providing such an environment was challenging, and indeed, the infection did spread to other dogs that we had in the kennels. Luckily, they were all KC vaccinated, so their symptoms were less severe.

Our team did their best to create a makeshift isolation area, ensuring Marley received the necessary antibiotics, anti-inflammatory medications, and supportive care. Despite our best efforts, the confined and poorly ventilated isolation kennels added unnecessary stress to Marley’s recovery.”

Marley’s recovery

After several weeks, the dedicated team could see signs of improvement. As his cough slowly subsided and his energy levels grew, the staff could see his playful personality bursting through.

Once Marley fully recovered, he joined the other dogs in the main kennel area. It didn’t take long for him to find a loving home where he’s continuing to thrive along with his two cat sisters!

What would improved isolation facilities mean for the rescue?

Marley’s situation isn’t unique. The rescue will undoubtedly take in more dogs with infectious diseases. In their words, “Marley’s case highlights the need for upgraded isolation kennels at Eden Animal Rescue. Modern isolation facilities would provide [us with]:

  • Adequate Ventilation: Proper airflow is crucial to prevent the spread of airborne pathogens and to ensure a healthy recovery environment.
  • Sufficient Space: Ample room allows for comfortable movement and reduces the stress associated with confinement.
  • Enhanced Sanitation: State-of-the-art materials and designs make it easier to maintain high hygiene standards, which are essential for containing infectious diseases.

These improvements would greatly benefit dogs like Marley, ensuring they have a safe, serene space to heal while protecting the rest of the animal population from contagion.”

The rescue looked to the Foundation for a grant

We’re delighted to say that we’ve pledged a £ 75,000 grant towards the kennel rebuild, and the project is underway!

They’ve sent us pictures of the refurbishment in progress, and we’re excited to see it coming along nicely.
